Why do I overthink everything?

Why can’t I say no without feeling guilty?

Why am I so hard on myself?

Why am I angry when I don’t want to be?

  DAYTIME APPOINTMENTS CURRENTLY AVAILABLE

Counselling for adults who have spent too long holding everything together

You may appear capable on the outside while feeling anxious, overwhelmed or completely exhausted underneath.

Perhaps you overthink conversations, feel guilty when you say no, react more strongly than you want to or no longer know what you need beneath everything other people need from you.

I can help you understand the patterns shaping your thoughts, feelings and relationships—and reconnect with who you are.

In-person appointments in Northamptonshire and Milton Keynes, and online throughout the UK.

Why do things from years ago still affect me now?

Have you lost sight of who you are?

Do you know who you are when nobody needs anything from you?

Do you change parts of yourself depending on who you are with?

Do you automatically say yes, then feel trapped, resentful or exhausted?

Do you replay conversations, wondering whether you said something wrong?

Do you feel guilty when you rest, ask for help or put your own needs first?

Does your life look fine from the outside while somehow feeling as though it no longer belongs to you?

These patterns often make sense when we understand what you learned about relationships, responsibility and keeping yourself emotionally protected. I can help you make sense of them and begin to respond differently.

Sometimes there isn’t one obvious thing that’s 'wrong'. You just know that something doesn’t feel right anymore.

Why do I feel responsible for keeping everyone else happy?

Why won’t my teenager talk to me anymore?

Or perhaps you’re here because you’re worried about your child or teenager. Something has changed. They’re anxious, angry, withdrawing, struggling at school, self-harming or simply don’t seem like themselves, and you’re wondering how best to help.

Why has my child changed so much?

I’m Sally.

If you’re looking through therapist websites trying to work out who you might actually feel comfortable talking to, I know how difficult that decision can be.

You might be wondering whether I’ll understand. Whether you’ll know what to say. Whether your problems are 'big enough' for therapy. Whether they're 'too big' and you won’t know where to start. Or whether you’ll sit down and suddenly wish you hadn’t come. You don’t need to arrive knowing where to start.

Sally Shanahan, counsellor supporting children, teenagers, and adults

I’m an integrative therapist and I work with adults, teenagers and children. I’m down-to-earth, genuine, interested in the person behind whatever has brought you to therapy, and I care. I won’t expect you to fit into a particular box or follow a set formula.

My work with adults often explores the parts of life that can be difficult to explain: why you react so strongly to certain things, why you feel responsible for everyone else, why saying no brings guilt, or why you have lost sight of who you are.

Our early experiences, relationships and sense of belonging can influence our self-worth, boundaries and the roles we take on throughout adulthood. Understanding these patterns can help you make sense of who you have become and begin choosing what feels right for you now.

Before becoming a therapist, I spent many years working with children, young people and families as a teacher. This experience, alongside my MSc in counselling children and young people, informs the way I support younger clients and understand the different parts of their lives.

Sometimes being genuinely heard by somebody who isn’t judging, fixing or expecting anything from you can be the beginning of something changing.

Whatever has brought you here, you don’t need to have the right words for it.

I provide a space that gives you somewhere to bring the things that are difficult to say anywhere else. Somewhere to understand what you’re feeling, where it may have come from and what you need now. You don’t have to work it all out alone.

You don't need to be in crisis to come to therapy. You might simply be tired of feeling anxious, overwhelmed or stuck. You might want healthier relationships, stronger boundaries or a better understanding of why you think and feel the way you do. Whatever has brought you here, you don't have to face it alone.

Every person is different, so therapy shouldn't follow a script. Sometimes we talk. Sometimes we explore patterns from the past. Sometimes we use creative approaches or practical strategies. Together we'll find an approach that feels right for you.

Taking the first step can feel daunting, and you don't have to commit to therapy straight away.

I offer a free 20-minute phone or Zoom conversation where you can ask questions, tell me what's been happening and decide whether I'm the right therapist for you.
